Blending photos in my digital scrapbooking is exactly what inspired me to master digital artistry over 20 years ago, and it remains the foundation of every page I create today.
If your photos feel flat, disconnected, or “just placed” on the page, then for sure, blending is the missing piece of the puzzle to add more fun to your digital memory-keeping practice and level up your photos.
What is Photo Blending?
Blending, also called masking or digital compositing, is the process of softening the edges between your photo and your background. It applies a gradient to the edges of the photo so that your image seamlessly disappears into the background of your digital scrapbooking page. So instead of the photo sitting on top of the page with distinct hard edges, the image becomes part of the background.
The result yields a simple, softer, more artistic, and more cohesive page.
Two Simple Ways to Blend Photos
There are two main ways to blend photos in digital scrapbooking: one is quick and easy, and the other offers you full creative control.
1. Clipping Masks (The Easy Way)
If you’re just starting your digital scrapbooking journey, then this is the best place to begin.
