Digital Scrapbooking Story Ideas: Most of us do not have a photo problem. We have a story problem. Hard drives are full, yet the words still will not come. This 90-minute class fixes that by reversing the usual order. Instead of hunting for something to say about a photograph, you begin with one digital element and let it spark your page design.

Why the Words Will Not Come

Ask a photo what happened, and it answers with a brief caption. Dad, Christmas, 1998. That tells a future reader where the picture belongs in the filing system. However, it says nothing at all about the memory itself.

The problem is not your lack of remembering. Instead, it is about asking the right question. Broad questions produce broad answers, so you end up with the same kind of answer. Meanwhile, the details worth keeping,  the small, specific, meaningful ones,  are left forgotten and untold.

A themed element can change that because it arrives already loaded with meaning and it asks something much more specific. As a result, you get an answer that might be fresh, surprising, and worth writing down. Furthermore, it rescues the thousands of ordinary photographs you have scrolled past for years, precisely because nothing obvious struck you about them.

Each of the four layouts began with an element rather than a plan. Consequently, each one needed a different technique to serve the story discovered. You’ll learn the how and why I landed at each of these simple 20-min scrapbook page designs. Note that these techniques are demonstrated in Adobe Photoshop with written instructions for Photoshop Elements and Affinity by Canva.

1. Stacking and Grouping

An extracted image adds interest to almost any page. You will lift an object cleanly from its background, then scale and shadow, before stacking and grouping alongside the elements that sparked the story.

2. ArtsyKardz Blended Photo

Next comes blending — but with a twist. You will learn how to uplevel your ArtsyKardz usage with clipping and blending to make use of your more mundane photos. Duplicated layers and subtle shifts are all included.

3. Embellish White Space

White space can be filled or not. Learn when and how you might work with white space to keep your pages balanced. This session covers embellishing a frame, so the artistry works its magic without ever being too much.

4. The Blended Collage

Finally, several photographs become one continuous surface. A FotoBlendz clipping mask provides the artsy foundation. Blend modes lift the color and contrast, while custom masking artistically fuses the images.
