Customize Masks Digital Scrapbooking: Modify FotoBlendz with Photoshop Brushes (Masterly Brushes Part 3)

Customize Masks Digital Scrapbooking: Self-Paced Course | Adobe Photoshop & Photoshop Elements

FotoBlendz clipping masks are the easiest way to blend photos into a digital scrapbooking page — but the right mask rarely fits perfectly straight out of the box. Session 1 of the Masterly Brushes series teaches you how to customize any clipping mask to suit your photo: extending, reducing, converting, and refining with Photoshop brushes across six step-by-step videos.

Note: This course is demonstrated in Adobe Photoshop CC, with verbal and written guidance provided for Photoshop Elements throughout.

Why Customizing Masks Changes Everything

A FotoBlendz mask that almost works is still a mask that doesn’t. The photo edge cuts off in the wrong place. The shape doesn’t quite match what the layout needs. Instead, the blend looks purchased, not designed.

Knowing how to extend, reduce, and refine a clipping mask with brushes means every mask becomes workable — because you are no longer locked into the shape it came with. Instead, you adapt it to the photo, the page, and the story.

In short, this session gives you that control. Furthermore, because five distinct techniques are covered across six videos, you will always have the right tool for whatever the mask needs.

What You Will Learn in Customize Masks Digital Scrapbooking

This session covers every major approach to customizing FotoBlendz clipping masks. Specifically, by the end, you will know how to:

  • Identify the right clipping mask for your photo using four reliable selection methods — so you start with the best fit every time
  • Extend a clipping mask using four techniques for increasing size and changing shape — including how to reveal more detail in blended photos
  • Reduce a clipping mask with precision — understanding the pros and cons of the Eraser Tool versus the Layer Mask and Brushes approach
  • Convert a clipping mask to a Layer Mask for the most dynamic and flexible application method available
  • Eliminate hard photo edges in clipping set scenarios using four methods — including three brush techniques for extending and softening edges
  • Embellish clipping masks with Transfers and Overlays to add artsy texture and visual interest
  • Modify brushes to refine their effect on any mask — and understand when each technique is the right choice

The 6 Modify Masks Digital Scrapbooking Videos

Video 1: Introduction to Clipping Masks (26 minutes)

A thorough introduction to what a clipping mask is and how to use one to effectively blend photos. Covered here are four ways to identify the right mask for your photo, why FotoBlendz masks are the easiest blending approach, and all the key tips and tricks for using them well. This video sets the foundation for everything that follows.

Video 2: Extend Masks (28 minutes)

How to change the size, shape, and density of a clipping mask to better suit your photo. Specifically, this video covers four methods for increasing mask size or changing its shape, how to reveal more detail in blended photos, and how to mix and match techniques to get the best result from each approach.

Video 3: Reduce Masks (16 minutes)

Three scenarios where reducing a mask is the right call — and how to do it. This video covers the Eraser Tool versus Layer Mask and Brushes, brush modifications for refining the reduction, and the limitations of each technique so you always choose the right one for the job.

Video 4: FotoBlendz Layer Mask (6 minutes)

A focused technique: transferring any clipping mask selection to a Layer Mask for maximum flexibility. Additionally, this video covers how to further customize the result with brushes — and why knowing all of these techniques together gives you complete control over any blending scenario.

Video 5: Extend Photo (21 minutes)

Hard photo edges in clipping set scenarios are one of the most common blending problems — and this video solves them. Four methods for eliminating hard edges, three distinct brush techniques for extending photo edges, and how to embellish with Transfers and Overlays for a more artsy, finished result.

Video 6: Creative Team Layouts (23 minutes)

Seven layout examples from the Anna Aspnes Designs Creative Team, with commentary and a full layout deconstruct by Anna. Seeing the techniques applied across different pages, styles, and photos is what shows you the full range of what becomes possible once the skills are yours.

Who Is Customize Masks Digital Scrapbooking For?

  • You use FotoBlendz masks regularly but have never tried to resize, reduce, or modify them
  • You want your blended layouts to look intentionally designed, not just assembled from supplies
  • The Eraser Tool, Layer Masks, and brush modifications are tools you have but have not used with confidence
  • You work in Adobe Photoshop, with Photoshop Elements guidance included throughout

What Makes This Session Different

Most clipping mask instruction stops at the basics — clip to mask, blend, done. This session goes further. Instead of one technique, five distinct approaches are covered in full — each with its advantages, limitations, and the scenarios where it outperforms the others. Furthermore, because all techniques are demonstrated on real layouts in progress, you can see exactly when and why each approach is the right choice.

Additionally, the Creative Team layouts at the end show how the same techniques produce completely different results across different pages, photos, and styles. That range is what turns a skill into a habit — something you reach for automatically, on every layout you make from here.

The Right Mask Is the One You Make Fit

Any FotoBlendz mask can become the right mask for your photo — once you know how to extend it, reduce it, convert it, and refine it. This session shows you how.

Ultimately, the best blend is not the one that almost works. It is the one you adjusted until it did.

The included kit make’s it easy to work along with Anna through each of the video demonstrations. Another excellent class, which I highly recommend taking.

Thank you so much Maureen – Really warms my heart to know this.

  5. Barbara Nixon (verified owner)

I binged on this class. I then went back and opened PS on another screen and did my own layout, following everyone of her ideas. Worked perfect because I was doing it, not just listening. Could work at my own pace. Finally, a few things sunk in and make sense now. Hopefully I will remember them, but if I don’t, I’ll just go back and review. Thanks Anna!

    • Anna Aspnes

Hi Barbara, thank you so much for sharing your personal process to viewing and learning the material – This is exactly the approach I suggest 1) Watch the videos 2) Repeat the videos, this time practicing the techniques and pausing as you go! Repetition deepens the impression and I’m a huge fan 🙂 Thank you for the kind words.

So far this is my favourite one in the Brushes serie. The bitesize parts of it are easier to take in. It shows you the enormous versatility of the brushes so well. Because Anna shows a lot of their uses in a visual way ( on her Photoshop layout direct )with the enclosed ArtPlayPalette and Brushset you can see the effect straight away . This make it easier to absorb the information. A highly recommended course.

    • Anna Aspnes

Awesome! This is a FOCUS session provided more depth and detail for those who took Part 2 and want more! Awesome feedback. My intuition has been saying this is the way to go with my classes and happy you feel the same way. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts about the class.

  7. Michelle James (verified owner)

Another great class Anna. I loved the coverage of all of the clipping masks techniques, in a measured speed. Very easy to follow. I paused the video from time to time to try the techniques out – wow! A great addition to previous classes I’ve taken here.

    • Anna Aspnes

Love that you loved it Michelle. Thank you for taking the time.

  8. Jeanne Hoadley (verified owner)

Anna has gone into great detail in explaining many techniques and options for working with clipping masks. Though I’ve been taking classes from Anna for several years now I never fail to learn something new. As a photographer I especially liked the extend photos sections as I’ve been plagued with dealing with hard edges without losing the integrity of my photo. Lots of new ideas to experiment with now.

    • Anna Aspnes

Awesome. Yes to extending those photo edges and keeping your image front, line and center 🙂 Thanks for sharing your thoughts Jeanne – Please let me know how it goes.

  9. Sandy Paulsen (verified owner)

Although I know my way around Photoshop this Class took what I knew and helped me put it together to create Artistry. Easy to follow even with limited knowledge in PS as everything is so well explained. Loved the breakdown of the samples in the last video. With the free DigitalArt pack PLUS $20.00 voucher you are always a winner. Thank you Anna xxx

    • Anna Aspnes

Thank you so much for the glowing review – Your experience is EXACTLY what I hoped for 🙂

Anna, I love all of your classes and I have signed up for almost all of them. I am always looking for either new ideas or new techniques to improve my artistry. This class ( Masterly 3) has really improved my use of clipping masks especially how to modify the mask to fit my need.
I find your classes very integrated, always reinforcing past design elements. I just finished this years pages of my time in Mazatlán. I wanted to be able to look back at my scrapping to check out how my friends and myself have changed over the years and also to see how my scrapping has grown. Thanks to you, I’m happy with the growth shown.
I always figure if I get one or two new ideas in a class it has been a success. And also the reminder of things forgotten. Keep the classes coming.

Thanks so much for your support of all I do around here – Love that you LOVED the class 🙂

Anna opened my eyes to the potential of clipping masks. I had long wondered how they could be modified to suit what I wanted to do with them and in this course Anna explains very clearly just how to achieve that. The course is well structured and easy to follow. She explains what you can and can’t do and, equally importantly, why. If you are interested in taking your brush and mask work to another level, this is the course for you.

    • Anna Aspnes (verified owner)

So happy this helped you Carol – It’s the VERY reason I teach 🙂 Appreciate the feedback very much.

  12. Ursula Gantner (verified owner)

I have a lot of Anna’s products and never knew what to do with the brushes. As my native language is German, I always looked at all the classes but had some doubts about whether I can understand the necessary. Finally, I made the step and asked Anna what she thinks to start with Masterly Brushes #3. I followed the free class already. Anna recommended starting with Design Principles and Design with Brushes and then the Masterly Brushes #3, what I did and I really am happy that I had to courage to do it. I learned a lot of new tricks using masks and brushes. Even I did not always understand the spoken dialogue, I had no problems to follow and understand all the steps in the video. These are my first classes, but not the last ones.

    • Anna Aspnes (verified owner)

      Wunderbar Ursula! Danke schoen 🙂

I purchased the ‘Mastering ArtPlay Palette Brushes #3’ class because I was awed by the scrapbook pages created by others using your templates in a (modified format) and wanted to learn how to modify masks.

I’m not into creating artsy pages, but I do want to produce pages with beautiful masks for photos. Your masks, especially the watercolor ones, seem to do that.

Your class on how to modify masks, with your slow, detailed instructions and examples provide the best training for what I want to accomplish.

Having completed my first pass through of the entire class, I am now ready go through the training again, very slowly, while practicing the various techniques. The .pdf instructions will be invaluable while I experiment, make mistakes, and must repeat.

In the meantime, I must look for the names of the templates used on the layouts I love and start collecting them, so I’ll be ready to create my own pages when I complete my hands-on learning .

Thank you so much for providing your brush and mask expertise.

    Cecile L. StJohn

Love your approach which is exactly as intended – Repetition deepens the impression and practice makes the magic happen. Please reach out if you need any assistance with finding specific products.

I just finished this class. It took me some time because there are so many wonderful techniques!! Great explanation of how to use the clipping masks in a multitude of ways via video and via written material. The use of multiple example throughout the class is so helpful for this visual learner. Also, when trying to duplicate the techniques the written material is very helpful to remind me of the different ideas or possibilities. Working with the products provided is an excellent way to follow along and reinforce the techniques in this “old” brain. This is now my new favorite class of all time. I am always trying to get clipping masks to do what I want them to do. My techniques had been hit and miss at best. The examples of why you might use one technique over another in certain cases is extremely helpful. Thanks so much Anna for sharing your expertise and talent!!

    • Anna Aspnes (verified owner)

Hi Terri – Thank you so much for the kind feedback on the course. I’m so GLAD it helped you 🙂

I have participated in almost all of Anna’s classes and have never been disappointed. She has the ability to pedagogically teach her skills in Photoshop, to both beginners and more experienced at the same time. Her classes are always filled with educational content from beginning to end. My native language is Swedish but I have never had trouble following Anna’s teaching in English. Although I have been scrapping for many years, there is always new to learn and I look forward to more classes in the future. Thank you Anna, for sharing your never-ending knowledge.
