Digital Scrapbook Layer Styles: Shapes & Repetition Layout Design in Photoshop

Digital Scrapbook Layer Styles: Replay Class | Adobe Photoshop

Shapes are one of the most powerful and underused tools in Adobe Photoshop — and in this class, that changes. In fact, digital scrapbooking layer styles, shape tools, and repetition are three skills that transform how a page looks and feels. Vectors give you scalable structure. Layer styles add depth and dimension. Repetition creates visual rhythm. This two-session replay class gives you a step-by-step foundation for building more intentional, artistic pages in Photoshop.

Why Digital Scrapbook Layer Styles, Shapes, and Repetition Change Everything

Most digital scrapbookers treat their page elements as things to place. A photo here. An embellishment there. A title somewhere it fits.

But a well-designed page is built, not assembled. Shapes create structure. Layer styles then add depth and dimension. Meanwhile, repetition pulls the eye through the layout and makes the whole thing feel considered — even when the technique behind it is simple.

In short, this class hands you the architectural tools. Frames, masks, shadows, outlines, metal rings, scattered brushes, custom alpha sets, word elements — all of it built from shapes you draw yourself and styles you apply or create from scratch. As a result, you will spend less time wondering why your page looks off and more time making it look exactly right.

What You Will Learn: Digital Scrapbooking Layer Styles, Shapes & Repetition

This digital scrapbook layer styles class covers a broad and practical range of skills across two sessions — from foundational shape-drawing to building your own custom elements. Specifically, by the end, you will know how to:

  • Load, draw, and customize shapes in Photoshop — rectangles, ovals, circles, squares, and your own custom shapes, including how to save and reuse shape presets
  • Build frames, mattes, and photo masks using the shape tools — with curved corners, clipping masks, and multi-shape combinations for spanning a photo across several frames at once
  • Apply and create Layer Styles to add special effects to shapes and text — including Bevel and Emboss, Inner Shadows, Contours, outline shapes, metal ring elements, and your own ‘MagicSprinklez‘-style scattered elements
  • Make brushes from shapes — and use brush settings to create scattered brushes you can save and reuse across future layouts
  • Build your own digital elements from scratch — tags, arrows (two different approaches), star shapes, alpha sets, word elements, custom WordLabels, and pattern-based shapes
  • Apply Repetition, Alignment, and Visual Triangle principles to your layout design — so embellishment placement feels purposeful, not random
  • Distribute, align, and use rulers and grids to establish a solid page foundation before adding a single element
  • Recolor and edit elements using Adjustment Layers — including how to use adjustment layers correctly with Groups — and integrate ArtPlay Palette supplies into your shape-based designs
  • Repeat and rotate shapes in a circle, move the Transform Point, and use Photoshop-specific tools like Patterns and the Properties Panel with confidence

The 2 Sessions

Session 1: Shape Tools — Vectors, Frames, and Masks

Session 1 starts with the foundation — why vectors matter, how to set your preferences, and how to draw shapes in Photoshop. From there, you will build frames with curved corners and create photo masks. You will also combine shapes within shapes and span a single photo across a multi-shape mask. Furthermore, you will make your own tag and frame elements, apply drop shadows, and create brush presets from shapes. By the end of the first session, you will have a complete layout foundation and a solid understanding of how shapes become design tools.

Session 2: Layer Styles — Special Effects, Custom Elements, and Design Principles

Session 2 goes deeper into Layer Styles. Specifically, you will demystify Bevel and Emboss, Inner Shadows, and Contours. You will also learn to find, load, and create your own custom styles. Additionally, you will build metal ring elements, make outline-only shapes, and create ‘MagicSprinklez’-style scattered elements. Patterns add texture to your designs — and those are covered here too. The session also covers building your own arrows, alpha sets, WordLabels, and star shapes. Finally, you will work through Repetition, Alignment, and the Visual Triangle method with a complete layout as your canvas.

Who Is This Digital Scrapbook Layer Styles Class For?

This class is for the digital scrapbooker ready to build pages with more intention and skill. In particular, it is a great fit if any of the following sound familiar:

  • Your layouts feel like a collection of placed parts rather than a cohesive, designed page
  • You know the shape tools exist in Photoshop, but have never explored what they can actually do
  • Layer Styles feel intimidating — you want to understand them and apply them with confidence, not guesswork
  • You are ready to start building your own digital elements instead of relying entirely on purchased supplies
  • Design principles like repetition and visual triangle sound interesting, and you want to understand how to use them on an actual page
  • You work in Adobe Photoshop and want instruction built specifically for your software

What Makes This Class Different

This is not a general Photoshop tutorial. Instead, every technique was chosen because it solves a real problem digital scrapbookers face — pages that look assembled rather than designed, embellishments that float without purpose, type that sits on the page rather than belonging to it. Digital scrapbooking layer styles, in particular, are taught here the way they actually work on memory-keeping pages — not as abstract effects, but as tools that make your photos and stories look better. Furthermore, because the class was built for scrapbooking specifically, the fonts, textures, shapes, and styles all work together the way they need to.

Additionally, what you build here does not stay in this class. Once you understand how to make a brush from a shape, how a layer style changes everything, and how repetition creates visual flow, you will bring that thinking to every layout you make. The techniques stack. The skills compound. Over time, the pages start to look the way you always imagined they could.

This Is Where the Page Begins

A shape is just a shape — until you know what to do with it. Then it becomes a frame, a mask, a scattered brush, a hand-built embellishment — an arrow that points exactly where you want the eye to go. In short, the tools were already in your software. So this class shows you how to use them.

Ultimately, every technique is a building block. The page you build with it is entirely yours.

I loved this class! After fumbling around for years in PS trying to learn how to make my own layer styles, Anna’s instructions and videos are just what I needed. Plus, learning all about PS Shapes and Repetition was a huge bonus, and opens up a whole new world for my journey in digital scrapbooking. Thank you, Anna! This class is a definite must!

I work in Photoshop a lot and am quite familiar with most of the tools. However, this class did a deep dive into the shapes tool and the style panel and opened my eyes to new ways I can be creative with my scrapbook pages.

This class was so informative. Photoshop can sometimes feel overwhelming as there is so much there and yet it also seems a mystery – what do all those things mean and what can they do??!! Anna systematically goes through each of the Shapes and Styles tools giving so much understanding and inspiration. Glad I took the class.

  5. Susan D (verified owner)

Anna has created another highly recommended class. She lifted the veil on using shapes and styles in photoshop. After taking the class, I was able to incorporate the techniques into a current scrapbooking project, turning my last remaining “ordinary” elements into something extra special. Thanks for sharing, Anna! I appreciate it more than words can express.
