Description
Photo Blending Digital Scrapbooking: Master with Gradients and Photoshop Brushes (Masterly Brushes Part 5)
Photo Blending Digital Scrapbooking: Self-Paced Course | Adobe Photoshop & Photoshop Elements
Personalized photo blending in digital scrapbooking is one of the most transformative skills you can develop in Photoshop — and Part 5 of the Masterly Brushes series covers it completely. Across three replay sessions, you will move from the five foundational blending approaches all the way through advanced layering, inverse masking, and the Puzzle method — taking your blending skills from basic to confident.
Note: This course is demonstrated in Adobe Photoshop CC, with additional guidance provided for Photoshop Elements throughout.
Why Custom Blending Changes Your Pages
A photo placed on a page sits on top of it. A photo that is blended belongs to it — edges dissolving into the background, the image and the artistry becoming one cohesive thing instead of two separate layers.
Custom photo blending in digital scrapbooking is what makes the difference. It is not a single technique but a set of skills — and once you have them, every photo you work with becomes a candidate for something more intentional than a simple drop and clip.
In short, this course gives you that skill set. Furthermore, because both basic and advanced approaches are covered in full, you will finish with techniques you can use immediately and build on for as long as you scrapbook.
What You Will Learn in Masterly Brushes Part 5
This course takes custom blending from first principles to advanced application. Specifically, by the end, you will know how to:
- Apply five approaches to custom blending — with extensive layout examples showing how each approach works across different photos and page styles
- Select and position photos for blended photo artistry layouts — so the starting point supports the blend before a single tool is applied
- Use the Gradient and Paint Brush tools step by step to custom blend images with digital art supplies
- Enhance blending with Brush Settings — varying and elevating the result beyond what a basic brush stroke achieves
- Target specific areas of your photos using the Puzzle blending method — for precise, controlled modifications that work with the image rather than against it
- Master Inverse Masking for seamless photo integration — and know exactly when this approach is the right one to reach for
- Stack techniques using multiple layers and duplication to perfect and deepen the blend
- Use Groups efficiently — saving time and increasing flexibility when blending with the Clipping Mask function
The 3 Photo Blending Digital Scrapbooking Sessions
Part 1: Basic Blending Techniques (approximately 2 hours)
Part 1 introduces the tools and techniques for custom blending photos with digital art supplies. You will learn the five approaches to custom blending through extensive layout examples, how to select and position photos for blended layouts, and step-by-step technique for using the Gradient and Paint Brush tools. After this session, the foundation is in place for everything that follows.
Part 2: Advanced Blending Techniques (approximately 2 hours)
Part 2 layers on the advanced skills. Specifically, this session covers Brush Settings for enhanced blending, the Puzzle method for targeted photo modification, Inverse Masking for seamless integration, and stacking techniques using multiple layers and duplication. Additionally, Groups are covered in depth — how to use them to increase efficiency and save time across the whole blending process.
Bonus Session 3: Questions, Deconstructs, and Going Deeper
A bonus session recorded in response to student questions from Parts 1 and 2. Covered here are clarifications on master custom blending techniques, additional Puzzle blending guidance, more layout examples and full layer deconstructs, using Groups with the Clipping Mask function, and a deeper look at when Inverse Masking is the right approach.
Who Is Photo Blending Digital Scrapbooking For?
This course is for the digital scrapbooker who is ready to move beyond basic photo placement and start blending images into their pages with purpose. In particular, it is a great fit if any of the following sound familiar:
- Your photos sit on top of the page rather than belonging to it
- You have tried blending with brushes, but the results feel inconsistent or incomplete
- The Gradient tool, Brush Settings, and layer Groups are tools you own but have not used with full confidence
- You want to understand not just how to blend, but when to use each approach and why
- You work in Adobe Photoshop, with Photoshop Elements guidance included throughout

What Makes This Photo Blending Digital Scrapbooking Course Different
Most blending tutorials show you one technique on one photo. This course covers five foundational approaches and four advanced methods — all demonstrated on real layouts in progress, with full layer deconstructs so you can see exactly what is happening at every stage. Furthermore, the bonus session adds another layer of depth by addressing the questions real students asked after watching Parts 1 and 2 — which means the teaching goes exactly where the gaps are.
Additionally, the included ArtPlay Palette Skylark means you can follow along with the exact supplies used in the demonstrations from the moment you download. No hunting for matching resources — everything is already there.
The Photo That Belongs to the Page
Custom blending is the skill that takes a photo from placed to integrated. Once you have it, every layout becomes an opportunity to do something more with your images than simply put them there.
Ultimately, the best blended page is not the hardest one to make. It is the one where you knew exactly what to do. Part 4 gets you there.

We have had the first live session and it was filled with so many A-ha moments! I figured out why my clipping masks weren’t always successful and so many tips and tricks for blending photos and images! This class makes you think about how you take photos and which ones will work for what technique.
I can’t recommend this class highly enough. If I could rate it with 6 stars I would! I have most of Anna’s classes and while I love every one, this is a game-changer for me!

There are so many tips and techniques to learn and experiment with. Don’t think about taking this class, just take the class, you will not regret it.

There is something about the way Anna presents content that resonates with my creative self, and the Master Custom Blending class sessions 3,4 and the bonus session have focused on techniques that I have really integrated as never before. All her classes are good, this one is special!

This class is a game changer and shows you how to elevate your digital artistry. As with all of Anna’s classes, this class is full of tips & tricks, clear how-to’s and lots of clearly demonstrated techniques using actual page layouts. The sessions are fun and full of encouragement. I highly recommend adding this class to your learning library.

I truly enjoyed this class and gained way more value from this class than the money I spent. Not only did I learn new techniques, I learned how to use Anna’s products in different ways. I am excited to play, repeat, and learn different ways to use stains and paint to contain my photos. As always, Anna’s classes are a great investment into elevating my artisty.

Wow!!! What a great class. I have been trying to learn from reading how other people create their pages, but without any real training in Photoshop. Horrible! But having found Ana’s classes, I am learning now how to “really” do the scrapbooking. This class was just what I needed. I have been re-watching the sessions, over and over. Always picking up something new each time. Really beginning to understand. And one of my efforts was used in this class and was oh-so-helpful to me. Really good feedback. Thanks, Ana

I loved this class. One of my favorite so far.
The second session featured puzzle blending and in the third session she showed more examples to help me understand it. I learned more about how to contain an image on a page as well as choosing a background paper that works well as a foundation for your photos. I’d never used paint or stain brushes much before but now I see their value for containing photos. Lots of information in this one! Highly recommend!

As a former software educator, I am most impressed by Anna’s relaxed teaching style, her genuine interest in helping her students, and her calm demeanor in the face of some technical challenges. She frequently asks if there are questions (and then answers them with demonstrations). The course was fun, informative, and easy to follow. Jump in if you are on the fence!

Being my first year with Photoshop and creating pages using blending techniques, this particular class has helped me more than any other. With the ability to review the sessions again by replay, and repeating the techniques, you can begin to see specifically what they do and which seems to help the most. I would like to take any other Brushes class Anna teaches in the future. A job well done and well worth the time, effort, and expense.

I really loved all of the things that are included in this wonderful class. I loved all of the great tips, suggestions and “whys” of blending, masks, gradients, etc.
There is so much information that I really need to watch the sessions over again to glean and incorporate all that is taught. Thank you Anna for sharing your expertise in such a nice way. Reinforcing some things you’ve said in the past and so much new information and ideas.
The only thing that I was disappointed in is that I was away during most of the class, so I didn’t get to use the techniques until the class was over. I asked for help in the Facebook group and sent an e-mail and didn’t receive a reply. I’m sure that it is because of so much going on right now with the new project 2022, the yearly sale and “everyday” stuff. It is still one of my favorite classes I’ve taken.

With every Anna Aspnes class I’ve taken, she puts in so much more content and includes tips and tricks than I’m expecting! I thought it was going to be basic help with blending, but it also included so much more. She paces the classes well so we can take a concept and practice a bit, then go back for more concepts and tips and tricks. I def recommend this and all of Anna’s classes!!

I highly recommend this class to everyone. Anna’s tips and techniques will help you make beautiful pages.
