Selections, Masking and Extractions Part 1 Class Digital Scrapbook Layout by Anna Aspnes Designs

Session 1: Selections and Masking Foundations

First, you will build a clear understanding of how selections work — and how to use them with purpose. Rather than jumping straight into tools, this session starts with the mindset behind good photo extractions, so that everything else falls into place more naturally. Specifically, Session 1 covers:

  • An introduction to photo extractions and the right mindset for creating them
  • Understanding selections — what they are and how they work in Photoshop
  • How to create and move selections, and convert them to masks
  • Different methods for adding, subtracting, and intersecting selections
  • Simple edits using the Select and Mask panel
  • Multiple ways to test your selections before committing to them
  • Mastering the selection options in the Tools Panel for better extractions
  • When and how to use the Marquee, Lasso, Polygonal, Magnetic, and Magic Wand tools
  • Adding and removing segments, plus how to close a selection cleanly
  • Useful shortcuts to speed up your process from the very first session

Session 2: Advanced Selection Methods

Building on Session 1, you will then move into a wider range of selection methods and creative applications — including some of the most useful tools in Photoshop that are often overlooked. In addition to further shortcuts and efficiency tips, this session also covers:

  • How to save, load, modify, and copy selections for a more flexible workflow
  • Using Grow and Similar — two underrated tools for faster, more efficient selections
  • Making selections using the Color Range and Focus Area tools
  • Tips and tricks for better extractions with Select Subject
  • A variety of ways to select and replace the sky in your photos
  • Using Sky Replacement to create artsy backgrounds for your digital scrapbook pages
  • How to bring in Transform tools, Blending Modes, Adjustment Layers, Layer Styles, the Clone Stamp, and Masking to enhance your extractions
  • Further shortcuts to make your extraction process faster and more efficient

This is a really good course. I thought I knew selections but thought this would be a good review but I have learned quite a lot. I am looking forward to the next section.

    • Anna Aspnes

Thanks Nancy! Always my goal to teach you something you didn’t know 🙂

  2. Rose-Ann Marchitto (verified owner)

That class was excellent, Anna. My favorite thing in scrapbooking has always been extractions and I thought I was pretty good at it. I discovered a whole new world in that class. Thank you.

    • Anna Aspnes

Absolutely made my day. Thanks for sharing 🙂

  3. Sonya Fuller (verified owner)

I do a lot of extractions and am always looking for better more effective ways to do them. This class was packed with helpful tips and tricks that I will definitely use going forward. I’m so glad I signed up!

    • Anna Aspnes

Thanks Sonya! So glad it proved helpful 🙂

  4. SLacy (verified owner)

So glad I took this class and learned new methods for extractions. Anna’s Classes are always packed with tons of info and her handouts and replays are a bonus to be able to go back and review. I loved having the two classes on consecutive days. I’m looking forward to Part 2.

    • Anna Aspnes

Thanks Susan. The consecutive days for this class certainly made sense. Appreciate the feedback 🙂

This course was excellent. As opposed to the above 3 reviewers, I am a brand new extractor!!! And I learned a lot. I will be reviewing often and already have. As a newbie to this skill, I wished I had the exact photos that were used in the class to start my work on. It took me quite awhile to find photos that were similar. I wondered if adding some photos to the class downloads for the participants to work on might be helpful for those like me.

    • Anna Aspnes

These have now been added to the class materials. I have included my photos (excluding people images) and links to download the others to avoid sharing other peoples photos.

I am also very happy to have taken this class, as I am of the several other classes I took last year.
Always very worthwhile! I am still in a learning process, and I have learned a lot with this class. Anna puts so much into her classes that I am very happy that I can download them and watch them multiple times at my own pace.
I also like the written Course Content in .pdf format where everything is typed very clearly and in detail. You don’t have to start taking notes yourself and these are a great help when you start working on a project yourself.
By watching this class about extractions I discovered that it does not always have to be very difficult to make an extraction and make something unique from your project with this technique. I couldn’t point out anything specific, because I found everything interesting. What appeals to me most in this class as well as in all others are the ideas and tips that Anna gives to achieve great results with the tools of the program and her products.
I’m already looking forward to part 2, and I’m very curious to see what comes next!

    • Anna Aspnes

Thank you Marie Claire for taking the time to create such a detailed review. I appreciate your time.

  7. Diane Gass (verified owner)

I have learned so much about the selection tools in PS from parts 1 and 2 of this class. I love to do extractions but never tried any of the options except for select subject. Anna’s lessons are well thought out and easy to follow, especially with the PDF included. Thank you, Anna!

    • Anna Aspnes

Appreciate this Diane. Always to goal to make the learning as easy as possible for you.

  8. Michelle James (verified owner)

I have taken many of Anna’s classes and this one definitely did not disappoint! So packed with information that I’m glad to have the handouts and the replay to go back to. I use extractions quite a lot on my pages and was glad to learn some new tricks and ways to improve! Very excited for the next part of this class!

    • Anna Aspnes

It’s ALWAYS so awesome when one of my advanced students still learns something new in a foundations class. Thanks for sharing your experience 🙂

  9. Judith McEntyre (verified owner)

Good Class showed me better and more effective ways to do selections, which I enjoy having on my page but frequently put off because of the effort to do them. Now I will do them more often. I like having the handouts, I can go back and be certain I am following the correct procedure.

    • Anna Aspnes

Yes to a better and easier approach!

      • Anna Aspnes

Thanks do much Raymond. I love that you are watching the sessions multiple sessions. Repetition deepens the impression!

I have watched the replay twice and each time learn new things. This class is an excellent way to learn how to use Selection tools for various shapes, how to incorporate them into another page to create something new. Anna has a knack of weeding out the tools that would be of little use which I appreciate. I highly recommend this class as a staple.
