Description

Adjustment Layers Digital Scrapbooking: Elevate Photo Blending with Photoshop Brushes (Masterly Brushes Part 6)

Adjustment Layers Digital Scrapbooking: Self-Paced Course | Adobe Photoshop & Photoshop Elements

They are one of the most powerful tools in Adobe Photoshop — and most digital scrapbookers are using only a fraction of what they can do. Part 6 of the Masterly Brushes series teaches you how to apply adjustment layers to your layouts for targeted color, lighting, and special effect modifications — transforming your blending and photo artistry from good to genuinely artful.

Note: This course is demonstrated in Adobe Photoshop CC. Adjustment layers work the same way in Photoshop Elements — all variations and workarounds for Elements are included throughout.

Why Adjustment Layers Change What Your Pages Can Do

Most digital scrapbookers adjust color and light by editing the element itself — flattening changes, committing to them, and hoping for the best. Adjustment layers change that completely.

Because adjustment layers are non-destructive, every modification stays flexible. Color, brightness, contrast, selective effects, black and white conversions — all of it remains adjustable long after the first pass. Combined with Layer Masks and Photoshop brushes, they become a precision tool for targeted blending that no standard edit can match.

In short, this course gives you that precision. Furthermore, with three full sessions covering basic techniques, light and color editing, and special effects, you will finish with a complete adjustment layer toolkit — and the confidence to reach for it on every page.

What You Will Learn in Adjustment Layers Digital Scrapbooking

This course covers adjustment layers from introduction through advanced application. Specifically, by the end, you will know how to:

  • Apply adjustment layers to your layout designs — and use the Layer Mask to transform and target your blending
  • Use all Color Fill options to make modifications that improve and unify your layout designs
  • Make light and color improvements to elements in your digital scrapbooking pages — and know how and when to use each tool
  • Combine adjustment layers with Layer Masks, Photoshop Brushes, Blending Modes, Channels, and Clipping Masks to create targeted special effects
  • Create Black and White conversions and Spot and Selective Color edits with precision
  • Apply graphic effects to tell better stories with your photos — including custom LightLeak and FotoGlow effects
  • Sharpen elements and manipulate digital art supplies using special effects adjustment layers
  • Work non-destructively — keeping every adjustment flexible and editable at every stage of the layout

The 3 Adjustment Layers Digital Scrapbooking Sessions

Part 1: Basic Adjustment Layer Techniques (approximately 1.5–2 hours)

Part 1 introduces adjustment layers and establishes the foundation for everything that follows. Covered here are all the ways to apply adjustment layers to layout designs, how to use the Layer Mask to transform blending, and how to use Color Fill options to make targeted modifications. After this session, the concept is clear, and the tools are in hand.

Part 2: Light and Color Editing Tools Explained (approximately 1.5–2 hours)

Part 2 elevates the blending. Specifically, this session covers how to make light and color improvements to elements in your layouts, how to choose between the different editing options for each situation, and how to combine adjustment layers with Layer Masks, Brushes, Blending Modes, Channels, and Clipping Masks for targeted special effects. Additionally, the guidance is practical — built around real pages, not abstract demonstrations.

Part 3: Special Effects Plus Q&A (approximately 1–2 hours)

Part 3 goes into creative territory — special effects adjustment layers that add imagination and visual distinctiveness to your artistry. Covered here are Black and White conversions, Spot and Selective Color edits, graphic effects, LightLeak and FotoGlow effects, element sharpening, and digital art supply manipulation. The session also includes a live Q&A so real student questions shaped the final content.

Who Is Adjustment Layers Digital Scrapbooking For?

This course is for the digital scrapbooker who wants more control over how their pages look — specifically through color, light, and targeted effects. In particular, it is a great fit if any of the following sound familiar:

  • You edit elements by flattening changes and hope you got it right — and want a non-destructive approach instead
  • Your pages feel close but not quite cohesive — and you suspect color and light adjustments would close the gap
  • Adjustment layers are in your Photoshop panel but you have never used them with confidence
  • You want to create more artful, distinctive pages — including graphic effects, selective color, and custom light effects
  • You work in Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements — both are supported with workarounds and alternatives throughout

What Makes This Course Different

Most Photoshop adjustment layer tutorials teach you what the sliders do. This course teaches you what to do with them on a real scrapbooking page — and why each approach produces the result it does. Instead of a feature walkthrough, you get a design-led course built around the specific problems digital scrapbookers face: pages that need more cohesion, photos that need more integration, and artistry that needs more imagination. Furthermore, because all three sessions are structured around real layouts in progress, every technique lands in context.

Additionally, the Photoshop Elements coverage makes this course genuinely useful regardless of which program you use. Adjustment layers work the same way in both — and where Photoshop has more options, the workarounds covered here mean Elements users never hit a dead end.

The Edit That Changes Everything

One targeted adjustment layer — a selective color edit, a light modification, a graphic effect — can take a page from finished to remarkable. This course gives you the skills to make that edit on purpose, on any page, every time.

Ultimately, the best adjustments are the ones you know how to make. Part 6 gives you that knowledge.

This class was an excellent way to see how the Adjustment Layers are used, where to use them, the differences they make with colors, highlights and make your page designs much more worthwhile. It was worth every penny for those who want to improve their techniques. I highly recommend it.

    • Anna Aspnes

So happy you enjoyed the class. Thanks for sharing your experience Ray!

  2. Joan Robillard (verified owner)

I had used Adjustment layers before this class but what this class did was show me how to elevate my artistry with adjustment layers not to just use them in place of destructive adjustments.

    • Anna Aspnes

So glad you learned something new Joan! Thanks for sharing 🙂

  3. Maggie Adair (verified owner)

I loved this class. I learned so much about Adjustment Layers and the different ways to use them. I’ve always wondered about some of the effects but have only used a few of them. This class has definitely helped broaden my thinking and given me more confidence to experiment using Adjustment Layers. If you’re unsure about how to use Adjustment Layers, then this class is for you

    • Anna Aspnes

Yes to this! So happy to have instilled some confidence. Now, the sky is the limit!

  4. Kathleen Sacry (verified owner)

I’ve been digitally scrapbooking for several years, using Photoshop exclusively for the last 4 years. When I think I know how to match colors and create art, Anna’s class taught me new ways to up the game. This class blew me away with all the adjustments I had never used before. It has written PDF instructions and easy-to-follow videos that are easy to follow. If you want to go deeper, I highly recommend this course.

    • Anna Aspnes

Thanks so much Kathy. Have loved what you have been creating!

  5. Tina Wilson (verified owner)

My scrapbooking style is storytelling with photos so most of my layouts consist of several photos and a focal point masked photo. After taking this class I’ve been experimenting much more with adjustment layers and finding there are several I have underutilized on my pages. While I still keep the integrity of my pages the same, I’ve used more artistry on the foundation under my framed photos as well as using some color effects on my black and white framed photos. This class has elevated my artistry.

    • Anna Aspnes

      Weee! Mission accomplished 🙂

  6. SLacy (verified owner)

I loved this class. Anna packed so much info into just 3 sessions. I was amazed at how quickly and easily I could adjust and improve my layouts after just the 1st session. This class was a game changer for me. I look forward to including what I learned in my workflow process, as well as continuing to stretch my imagination to try different editing techniques. I highly recommend this class; it is well worth it.

    • Anna Aspnes

Definitely! Your layouts have absolutely transformed and it has made me so happy to have such impact on your artistry. Thank you for the glowing review.

  7. Melissa Thompson (verified owner)

Enjoyed this class a lot, despite using PSE. Was surprised to find it wasn’t really over my head. Have been using adjustment layers ever since

    • Anna Aspnes

I think we pretty much found workarounds for all the ALs missing in Photoshop Elements. And it’s so much easier when you know how 🙂

  8. Kelly de Haas (verified owner)

Wonderful class! Tons of information via video and the notes were great as a reference when going back and working on my projects. I especially loved the way Anna presented several different ways to do the same thing. Everyone can find something that works for them! I love your classes!

    • Anna Aspnes

Thanks Kelly. Always trying to give you options. It’s less about learning Photoshop but more about enriching your process and making your digital products work for you. Appreciate the kind words.

  9. Ramona Fissinger (verified owner)

I dabbled with using adjustment layers here and there prior to taking this class, not understanding their true potential, but this class changed all that. Now I’m using adjustment layers regularly and love their non-destructive capabilities as well as ability to mask. Anna provides great instructions that will truly elevate your work, whether on a scrapbook layout, art journaling or digital artwork. I highly recommend this class (plus it’s fun:))

    • Anna Aspnes

Thanks so much Ramona. Fun is THE most important part of making the magic happen!

  10. Fran Meehan (verified owner)

Thank you so much for this class, Anna. I think I’ve been using Photoshop as long as you have, and I still learned so much from this class. You went into such fine detail of all the adjustment layers. Now I have to use the ones I never thought useful to me! You are such a good teacher. I am looking forward to more!

    • Anna Aspnes

There is ALWAYS something new to learn. So happy to be able to provide your with more ‘tricks’ to elevate you artistry.

  11. Charlene Marchbank (verified owner)

This class on adjustment layers showed me different ways to use adjustment layers to improve my scrapbooking skills. I always wondered about all of the adjustment layers but was too lazy to try and learn on my own, just using the few I was comfortable with. I am experimenting with my new scrapbooking layouts.

I have taken several of Anna’s Live Classes, as well as many of the video classes, and have learned so much from Anna’s classes and products in the past several years, more than I have from any designers/scrapbookers. As others have said, you have access to the material forever.

    • Anna Aspnes

Thank you Charlene. This makes heart smile. If you are learning then I have achieved my ultimate goal 🙂

  12. Kim (verified owner)

The work arounds for PSE, all the fabulous examples plus Anna’s notes and detailed presentation make this class a must have! I had no idea how useful adjustment layers could be in giving my layouts that extra boost. I will be using all of the tips and techniques from this class in my layouts. Highly recommend this class!

    • Anna Aspnes

I may not be a PSE user myself but can certainly find my way around and find alternatives for my PSE tribe. Thanks so much for the kind words.
