Digital Scrapbook Lighting Techniques: Brighten Pages with Blending Modes
Digital Scrapbook Lighting Techniques: Brighten Pages with Blending Modes | 6 Edited Replay Videos | Adobe Photoshop CC & Photoshop Elements
Your photos hold the moments. Light is what brings them to life.
Have you ever looked at a scrapbook page and wondered why some feel flat while others feel full of magic? Often, the difference is not more elements or more effort. It is light — and knowing how to use it. Digital Scrapbook Lighting Techniques: Brighten Pages with Blending Modes will show you exactly how, using a variety of techniques in both Adobe Photoshop and Elements to transform your pages so they feel softer, more dimensional, and genuinely alive.
Once you understand how light behaves and how to recreate it in your pages, everything changes.
Let’s Make This Simple — and a Little Magical
Lighting can sound technical. With the right steps, it does not have to feel that way at all.
Think of this class as learning how to lead the eye, highlight what matters, and create a sense of warmth and glow in your pages — using blending modes, light overlays, and soft photo editing effects in a way that feels creative and completely approachable.
What You Will Learn in Digital Scrapbook Lighting Techniques
The class is built in two parts. First, you will build your foundation — because once you understand how light and blending modes work, everything becomes easier.
- What blending modes are — and how to use them with real confidence
- 5 lighten and contrast blending modes explained simply and clearly
- How Photoshop applies blending modes to your digital artistry
- Time-saving shortcuts to speed up your workflow
- When to use Pass-Through blending mode — and why it matters
- The difference between Fill and Opacity — and how each one changes your results
- An introduction to the “Special 8” blending modes for more advanced creative control
Then, you will move from understanding to creating — applying digital scrapbook lighting techniques directly to your photos and designs.
- Edit photos using blending modes for softer, more cohesive results
- Modify and enhance your digital supplies with light and color
- Recolor and brighten using overlays
- Create a soft, dreamy photo effect
- Add light using FotoGlows and brushes — and learn where to place them for the best effect
- Create your own custom FotoGlow shapes
- Define and use Photoshop brushes with intention
- Add glow and movement to your titles
- Lighten your pages using filters
- Add subtle magic with blur effects
The result? Pages that feel more alive, more dimensional, and more like art.
A Little Bonus Magic
You will learn how to create your own FotoGlow style brushes during the class — but the ones created for this class are also included as a bonus, so you can start experimenting right away without waiting until you have made your own.

What Students Are Saying
“The fresh techniques and ideas Anna presented in this class will be easy to incorporate into my art pages. She covered multiple ways to add light and bright, and demonstrated the blend mode settings for various techniques. I love watching her demonstrate how she adjusts the elements or brushes to yield the best results, and always take away valuable insights to add to my own layouts.” — Beverly C., verified buyer
“This class offered a lot more than I expected — so much more that I had to re-watch it and will most likely watch it again. I learned how to enhance my layouts, photos and elements not only with the use of FotoGlows, but also with the application of various blending modes, which Anna demonstrated and explained in depth.” — Susan D., verified buyer
“I loved having a class focusing on one part of the scrapbook process. The first part reviewed blending modes which I had started to take for granted. Now I am practicing blending modes, FotoGlows, and Gaussian blur with purpose. I loved learning to make my own brushes.” — Verified buyer

I have taken many of Anna’s Classes – in fact most of them – but there is always something new to learn or just to sharpen our skills. I loved learning tips for using Photoshop, along with new ideas to brighten and colour my layouts. Learning where to place FotoGlows was a particular favourite of mine from this Class. I also gleaned more technical information about Blending Modes.
This was a fabulous Class and I had a lot of fun playing while I practised.
I Highly Recommend this one to upskill in PhotoShop CC, making more interesting pages and having fun doing it!
Anna Aspnes –
Thanks so much Michelle! It’s always helpful to hear from beginners alike as I am always aiming to offer something new for everyone in my classes. I appreciate your support of my work.

I found this course to be very helpful. The 2 hour class is broken into 5 segments which makes it easier to listen to a portion, try the suggestions, return for the next. I have used Anna’s suggestions of duplicating photos and adding a copy of that photo with a blending layer, copying it again with another blending layer to highlight either the photo or shadows or contrast. This was new to me. The filters were also helpful. This was certainly worth the cost and help it has provided to me.
Anna Aspnes –
Thanks so much for the kind words Ray. I am so glad this class has helped you elevate your artistry.

Anna’s classes are the best ever! The Magically Brighten class offered a lot more than I expected, so much more that I had to re-watch it and will most likely watch it again. In this class, I learned how to enhance my layouts, photos and elements not only with the use of Foto Glows, but also with the application of various blending modes, which Anna demonstrated and explained in depth. I highly recommend this class for anyone who wants to take their digital scrapbooking skills to the next level.

I love learning new techniques and Magically Brighten was just the thing to add life to my pages. I do use the blending mode settings a lot from a previous class. But this class I focused more on using photo glows. And I am very much looking forward to the new shadows class next week. Watching her work is inspiring and I always learn something new even with techniques I had been using. Thanks, Anna, for all you do.
